Spitting Feathers is apparently a Japan-only release from Thom Yorke, following the release of The Eraser. It has the same three tracks as the Harrowdown Hill EP, with additional tracks 'A Rat's Nest' and 'Iluvya.'
Even though the standout track on this EP is essentially the single from his LP, this disc is worth a listen. 'Drunkk Machine' is an extremely dark and introspective album opener, and it really sets the mood for Thom's expected electronic melancholy. This song (along with the rest of the album) is best enjoyed with good headphones and without distraction. The production really shines through; simple touches such as Thom's doubling of the line “swiveling heads,” will give you a chill.
The beginning of the second track 'A Rat's Nest,' is reminiscent of Amnesiac's 'Like Spinning Plates.' While that Radiohead record is the most similar to the sounds on this EP, Spitting Feathers takes that minimalist and electronic influence and relies on it constantly. 'A Rat's Nest' isn't that beat-heavy, but throughout the EP that driving feeling of a house-beat pulse is there – whether implied or sonically present.
The album ends with 'Iluvya,' which is a fairly unremarkable track. It maintains the mood of this little album and is enjoyable, but it won't set any new precedents. It's really just that which makes Spitting Feathers a good, but not great release. Although a quality EP, we know Thom can do better. Even though I love most of what this man has recorded, I never feel totally satisfied with the disc.
For any Tarantino fans, this is Thom Yorke's 'Jackie Brown.' It's good, and by another artist's standards it may be great, but it doesn't hold up against previous work.
