"A Song For the Lovers" fué el primer single de Richard Ashcroft desde que se separó una de las más grandes bandas de los años 90.
Continuando la línea de Urban Hymns, pero sin las brillantes guitarras de Nick McCabes, sustituído por una enorme orquesta de cuerdas y una afable producción.
La canción toma tú atención desde el momento en que se inicia con una intro orquestal que luego parece pasar sin sobresaltos y sin demandar tú cuidado. Es una canción bastante agradable, pero simplemente no tiene ese plus o algo que realmente lo convierta en un gran single de regreso.
"A Country Thing, City Thing, Blues Thing" nos da una idea de como podría haber sonado una canción del debut de "The Verve", con cuerdas y una sobrecargada producción.
"Precious Stone" tiene un poco de su foco en ello, y algo necesario del "Alone with everybody". Un toque de mordacidad y crudeza a la vez.
Así que todos son bastante decentes, pero uno no puede dejar de sentirse un poco decepcionado después de las expectativas que el final álbum The Verve nos dejara.

A Song For the Lovers was Richard Ashcrofts first single since splitting up one of the greatest 90s bands so "A Song for The Lovers" was highly anticipated.
It continues where Urban Hymns left us but Nick McCabes brilliant guitar work is replaced by a huge string orchestra and smooth production.
The song grabs your attention the moment it starts with a huge orchestral introduction but after that it just seems to pass by without really jumping up and demanding your attention. It's a pleasent enough song but it just doesn't have that extra edge or bite to really make it a great comeback single.
The first B-Side Country Thing City Thing Blues Thing gives us an insight into what a song off The Verves debut album A Storm in Heaven would have sounded like with strings and production overload.
Precious Stone has a bit of an edge to it, It was something the album "Alone With Everybody" needed. A bit of rawness to it and a bit of bite.
So all in all ASFTL is a decent enough single but you can't help but feel a little dissapointed with it after the expectations The Verves final album left us with.
