El Trío de Omar Rodríguez-López - Ciencia De Los Inútiles

Ciencia de los inutiles
Lunes

It has been awhile since I have done these little beauties of reviewing Omar Rodriguez Lopez’s albums that pop out faster than you can say ‘Jack Robinson.’ (Oh my God, terrible CS Lewis quote there). Released on 14 of February, it would have been very suitable for a Valentine’s Day present. (Not that I believe in that).

Well a month and a day later… Here we go, track by track review of:
Ciencia de los Inútiles
Lunes

Upon hearing the first notes, you think, Is this Omar? Seriously, it is a very big break from other songs of his such as the energetic Mars Volta’s hits or the Se Dice Bisonte… album. While you wait for the big guitar solo of some sort, it never comes but instead you are washed over with waves of acoustic magic and the hauntingly strong vocals of Ximena Sariñara as well as the occasional phaser like guitar effects, which act as Omar’s footprints making the sound and feel instantly recognisable. Lunes opens up with the vocals beautifully, although the lyrics are all in Spanish, it adds to the captivating quality that is required in an opening track.

And as can be seen the tracks are the days of the week in Spanish, and we start with Monday…
Viernes

… Which leaps straight into the end of the week, Friday.

This track opens up and you are instantly taken away with its ‘waterfall’ noises and clear vox. It at once reminds one of a calm Friday afternoon. The guitar part demonstrates a sort of quiet and still happiness. Since the linguistics of the lyrics aren’t understood, the guitar is left to translate the song content. Another great feature is the clarity of the contrabass, played by Aaron Cruz Bravo. The song’s feeling really comes through with these acoustic songs and it’s truly amazing that Omar can create a great diverse range of music.
Miércoles

The video for this arrived on Youtube in late February and with already over 10,000 views it’s proven to be popular and with mostly positive fan reviews. There is a very Omar moment in the middle of the song where a break occurs and there is a beat, not unlike that of a dial up modem. Which goes to show that the sly Omar is showing his variety in music. The electronic beat seems a little out of place with nothing to compliment it, but as already said, it’s the trademark Omar footprint for variety and creating something different.
Noche Día

This track literally translates to ‘Night Day’ and the cricket like chirps at the beginning of the track definitely get you in the mood, the spoken word is rather like telling a bed time story, it’s calm and soothing and can send anyone into a conscious state of dreaming.

The day and night is constrasted well in this song, with the soothing chiming of the ambient music and the clear speech awakens the music and presents the brightness in the day of the track. The wind chimes create a magical feeling that sounds just pretty.

Useless Science ?
Martes

The chirpy lyrical ability of Ximena in this track is the highlight. The overall guitar sound is relaxed and mixes well with the frantic vocals. This track, Tuesday, is rather in the middle of the week like. Where it represents a day that is much the same as Monday, this track presents a repetition of sorts. The beat is easily stuck in your head and the chorus is memorable. The sound imitates the feeling of walking into a bright sunlit room that’s been untouched but at some part of the mind, you remember where you are. A fantastic track.
Jueves

Acoustic guitar brings the mood to the fore and contains the likeness of the sadness and tranquility of Miércoles. Pop like quality of the tune is very appealing. The song is enjoyable and in the middle breaks into electric guitar twangs and tunings to keep our attention. This is most definitely a good indication that Omar is behind the wheel of this record (again) and it’s which leads back into the still of acoustic and leaves us.
Sábado

This Sabbath day, greets us with mournful strings and they continue as an instrumental track. The guitar and strings become more and more frantic and intense as the track goes on. No relaxing for Saturday. This mystical combination is a whole bunch of contradictions. The guitar is relaxing, yet the strings are quick and fills your ear buds with tension and terror, almost like some huge scene of anticipation out of a film.
Domingo

The final track, is rather like a good bye lullaby, where Ximena’s voice is at a crying ‘so long farewell, adíos, goodbye’ stage. It’s very sad, because I am sure no one wants the CD/album to end, just as much they don’t want Sunday to end, to bring around Monday. The beating of the guitar strings tug on the heart strings and this is simplistically beautiful.
Verdict:

Omar takes the politeness of Octahedron a further step into the stripped down, quiet, acoustic realm with this album and does considerably well. The various breaks with strange and eclectic electronic beats does take us away for a minute but then returns to the loveliness that is Ciencia de los Inútiles. The vocals and melancholy feelings of the Trío’s musicians fit very well together. Ximena and Omar need to pair up more often for these gentle tunes.

With this album, Less is definitely more!

If only the real days of the week sounded this good!
